A Mother's Heartbreak

An only child in a union abruptly cut short

Son of an awarded war veteran killed in a senseless battle

Given I was his namesake, took over when he expired

Had no recollection of him

For he was all too sudden taken away

Was told I was his spitting image

The savior to continue the next of his race

Mother, with all her precious youth was crushed by the loss

With no one to turn to, as I was often told

She a product of forbidden love, abandoned from birth

Father was the only one who cherished her

And provided her with a protective shelter

Since the loss she gave up on almost everything

Including her own future

Except for me, her one shining light

She worked till the wee hours of the morning

Trying to make ends meet

Aspiring to open the otherwise closed doors for me

Planned to make me into the man she once knew

Full of principles and courage

But when I told her, as I divulged what was real

That the man I took home with me

Was more than just another friend

She stared into nothingness

As if she did not bother to look at me straight

Wanted to shake her so she could tell me how it felt

But there was nothing, not even a hint

Waiting to hear her say, "how could you?"

Although she did not openly object

And no fight ensued between us

Her manifest calmness was more than I could bear

She had no control, I caused her heart to break

Into more than a million pieces

Because of this my father's legacy would not continue

And I would be the last
