Family Reunion

The house smelled of dried flowers and pot roast,

Aromas that bring back my childhood.

Front door with its original paint chipping,

It opened and closed with a shallow shriek.

The varnish of the hardwood floors now faded

From the rushing of a thousands steps.

Same concrete walls that lay witness to the past

Until now stands erect,

From within its crevices and cracks

Blame, pardon, murmurs and screams are forever stored.

Every possession in its original place,

Everything remains the same.

The passage of time seems to have no authority.

Over the place where I grew up,

That very same dwelling where I was nurtured.

Only now the mood was different.

It was melancholy.

No more sound of the pitter-patter of tiny feet

Or of laughing children.

As I moved in to the familiar ground,

Saw photographs scattered all over,

I saw a picture of the boy with a faraway look,

The bewildered boy who used to be me.

He long ago ceased to be,

At long last engulfed by new realities.

Still with unremarkable resemblance

To the woman that I am is eerie.

Once again, time has come to gather courage

Before receiving my kin's audience.

Upon seeing me Father shook his head in disbelief,

He was furious.

Mother flee to the other room,

Sobbing in one corner she was positively distraught.

Siblings watched, unable to neither move nor reason.

Like a weary child overcome with shame and guilt

I turned my back.

There seemed to be no escape from the harsh scenario.

Now dispatched from the inner circle,

I am regarded as a bystander.

A spectator observing what was once my loving family.

Begging for endowment,

Asking for their trust once again.

Clamoring for once to be heard,

Seeking to go back to their security.
